To Be or Not to Be Comedogenic

What is meant by non comedogenic?  The benefit of using skin care products that are non-comedogenic involves how your skin produces oil and what happens when that oil is trapped within your pores.  Your pores have sebaceous glands which produce and oil called sebum.  The oil is useful because it helps to keep your skin moisturized.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, a “comedo” is an “acne lesion”, a hard blockage created from an excess of sebum in a pore. This blockage can lead to whiteheads, blackheads and pimples, so “comedogenic” refers to ingredients or products that have a tendency to block pores and promote comedones (plural of comedo), or acne.

If you’re looking for a non-comedogenic product, meaning that it will not clog your pores, we suggest only using products with ingredients rated a 2 or lower. With that said, all skin is unique, meaning that everyone’s skin will react differently to these products and their ingredients.

For some, a product with a 2 rating on the comedogenic list will cause a major breakout while others can use a 4 rated product with no problems.
